Elvis has left the building... and no you can't copyright your sighting

I was perusing the World Wide Web for copyright information. I came across a really great US Copyright Office website that answered a lot of questions about copyright rules. I had to chuckle when I read this inquiry under frequently asked questions... seriously, do people frequently ask this?

"Q: How do I protect my sighting of Elvis?

A: Copyright law does not protect sightings. However, copyright law will protect your photo (or other depiction) of your sighting of Elvis. File your claim to copyright online by means of the electronic Copyright Office (eCO). Pay the fee online and attach a copy of your photo. Or, go to the Copyright Office website, fill in Form CO, print it, and mail it together with your photo and fee. For more information on registration a copyright, see SL-35. No one can lawfully use your photo of your sighting, although someone else may file his own photo of his sighting. Copyright law protects the original photograph, not the subject of the photograph."

Visit the website for more information and a few laughs.

That is ridiculous! I guess people will try to copyright just about anything. Thanks for the laugh!

PS - your cat is adorable!

Thanks! She keeps us entertained! I tried to get her to pose with our Copyright for Schools text, but she wasn't being very cooperative. I think she just looks angry in that photo. Oh well... I would have probably had to cite the information on the website anyway...

Becca,
This is hysterical! I cannot believe someone would be so zany, but I suppose anyone claiming to see him might be goofy enough to go this far too.

Oh man...and I was planning on using that to make my millions. Back to the drawing board...

Great topic to get us thinking -- and the cat does look a bit angry. :)

That is so funny. I held a surprise 60th birthday party for my mom and had an Elvis impersonator sing for her! It was great! We held it at a senior center and one of the seniors told a guest that they knew Elvis didn't die they just saw him going down the hall into our rental room. LOL.
